We saw lava layers there Patty but the gorlogy books say it's carbonate - don't believe it :D

I think it's a lava pillar. They are formed when an extinct volcano wears away and leaves the harder rock from the center caldera behind. This is the smallest I've ever seen. In the western United States we have huge ones.

I did a lot of traveling here in the states when I was much younger and I miss it a lot. I may be moving to Wisconsin in a few months. Maybe that will cure my itchy feet for a while. :D
